Huangjue Ancient Road

For thousands of years, this old street has become as quiet as water. As long as people remember, this ancient road will never disappear.

The north wind rolls up fallen leaves and blows on the old street of Huangjueya on the southern mountain slope, creating a sense of autumn.

The Huangjue Ancient Road is one of the most famous ancient roads in Chongqing, and was once the only passage that merchants from Chongqing, Guizhou, and Yunnan had to pass through. Due to the planting of white figs along the way, it was named “Chongqing’s First Ancient Road”. The merchants in the south left the ferry crossing at Haitang Creek Pier and went up the mountain via the Huangjue Ancient Road. The mountain road is rugged and steep. When people and horses are exhausted, they will stop at Huangjueya Mountain Pass to rest. This is the birthplace of Huangjueya Old Street.

The Huangjue Ancient Road, as a southbound thoroughfare in Chongqing, has many missions such as exchanging goods, military fortresses, and so on. The bluestone board of this ancient road is engraved with the years it has passed. This ancient road is no longer as busy as before, but it is still an unusual place to enter the Chongqing route, and frequent flying over the old streets is the best explanation.

No matter how age changes, a cup of tea and casual conversation are often the best interpretation of the word “comfort” in the eyes of Chongqing people. The renovated old street may just be a novelty for tourists, but it is a change for residents. Accompanied by dim lights and hazy eyes, people kept happily discussing small household matters.

Huangjueya Old Street has witnessed many of Chongqing’s history, and the Daxia Post Station and Tianshun Lane Chamber of Commerce were established here. With the opening of Chongqing Port, Guizhou and Yunnan chambers of commerce have successively opened in Huangjueya Old Street.

Sanmao lives deep in the old street. Perhaps it is this unique ancient path and the flow of people that planted the roots of wandering for this talented and extraordinary woman. I don’t know if Sanmao has turned into a tree as she thought, standing high on the Huangjue Ancient Road to protect pedestrians from wind and rain.

A thousand years ago, the sound of horse hooves echoed on the cobblestone road, transporting goods back and forth; A thousand years later, footsteps echoed once again on the bluestone road. In the tide of history, perhaps we are all like people carrying baskets, not coming back, just passing by.

This ancient road has lasted for thousands of years, and its mission to serve as a southern passage for Chongqing has long ended. History is always creating and changing, the past years are worth remembering, and the future journey is worth looking forward to!
