CHONGQING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MUSEUM

It is a large-scale popular science education venue for the public, modern, comprehensive, and multifunctional. The Chongqing Science and Technology Museum is a basic science popularization facility for implementing the strategy of “developing Chongqing through science and education” and improving citizens’ scientific and cultural literacy.

The Chongqing Science and Technology Museum is one of the top ten social and cultural infrastructure projects identified by the Chongqing Municipal Government. As a modern, comprehensive, and multifunctional venue for large-scale scientific and educational activities aimed at the public, it is a directly affiliated institution of the Chongqing Association for Science and Technology. The museum is located in the core area of Chongqing Jiangbeizui Central Business District (CBD) at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Jialing River, and is dedicated to promoting science and education to enhance citizens’ scientific and cultural literacy. It was laid on January 7th, 2006. Construction began in October of the same year and was completed on September 9, 2009. The museum covers an area of 37 acres with a building area of 48300 square meters (including 300000 square meters for exhibition and education), with a total investment of 567 million yuan (including 400 million yuan for construction and installation projects and 167 million yuan for demonstration projects).

The exterior of Chongqing Science and Technology Museum is made of stone and glass. The external stones are overlaid with various colors, resembling hard rocks, metaphorically referring to “mountains”; 60% of the entire exterior wall, nearly 10000 square meters of glass curtain wall, is clear and transparent, symbolizing “water”. The sharp edges of the stones and the transparency of the glass are just right, highlighting the characteristics of Chongqing as the “hometown of mountains and rivers”. The Chongqing Science and Technology Museum is divided into Zone A and Zone B. The highest point of buildings in Zone A is about 57 meters, and the lowest point is 24 meters. From above, it looks like a huge ‘fan-shaped crystal palace’. The theme of the exhibition is Life, Society, and Innovation at Chongqing Science and Technology Museum. There are six themed exhibition halls including life science technology, disaster prevention technology, transportation technology, national defense technology, aerospace technology, and basic science, as well as a children’s science park and industrial lighting. Two special exhibition halls. 400 sets of exhibits cover materials, machinery, transportation, military, aerospace, microelectronics, information and communication, computer applications, virtual simulation technology, life sciences, environmental sciences, basic sciences, and ancient Chinese science and technology.

The Chongqing Science and Technology Museum aims to build internationally advanced, domestically first-class, and Chongqing characteristic science museums, and carry out science popularization education activities to the public through forms and channels such as science and education exhibitions, scientific experiments, and technology training. Chongqing Science and Technology Museum will continue to improve and expand its functional system, making it a platform to experience the charm of science, a hall to inspire innovative ideas, a window to showcase scientific and technological achievements, and a place to develop popular science education.
