The Three Gorges Museum (Chongqing Museum) was founded in 1951, formerly known as the Southwest Museum. In June 1955, with the approval of the General Office of the State Council, it was renamed as Chongqing Museum, and in September 2000, it was renamed again as China Chongqing Three Gorges Museum (Chongqing Museum).
The collection of Chongqing Museum was originally inherited from Southwest Museum, including antique porcelain, calligraphy and painting, guqin, and Chinese ink preserved in Chongqing during the Anti Japanese War. Gradually expanded to include ancient anthropological specimens from the rear areas during the Anti Japanese War, bronze artifacts from the Ba Shu period, Han Dynasty cultural relics (stone carvings, stone gates, painted bricks, etc.) from the Three Gorges region, as well as ethnic minorities in Southwest China during the socialist construction period. These collections constitute the main exhibitions of the museum: cultural relics of Southwest ethnic minorities, historical relics of Chongqing, natural specimens, revolutionary relics, past porcelain, ancient calligraphy and painting.
The Chongqing Three Gorges Museum officially opened to the public on June 18, 2005. The museum covers an area of 30000 square meters. The building area is 45098 square meters, including an exhibition hall area of 23225 square meters. Now, in addition to 10 permanent exhibitions of its own, the museum also holds 50 temporary exhibitions every year, attracting 1.7 million visitors annually.
Based on the heritage of Southwest Museum and Chongqing Museum, the China Three Gorges Museum located in Chongqing is introducing innovative spirit. It is now one of the earliest national level museums, receiving policy and financial support from both central and local governments. The museum has been selected as a national demonstration base for patriotic education, a national base for educating minors, and a national base for science education.
